In this scene (folio 14 recto), the author has made an effort to differentiate strips of different types of land, which run diagonally across the page, each strip being glossed. In other Nahuatl manuscripts, we do see both “tequitlalli” and “tequitcatlalli” (along with tequimilli and tequitcamilli). The distinctions remain to be studied more fully. From tribute land, all agricultural produce would be used to provide the tributes required by the local authorities (indigenous) and the colonial Spanish authorities. “Mecatlalli” has yet to be attested in other manuscripts, but it appears to mean cord-land, i.e. measured land, and therefore perhaps private land or land pertaining to the town base (600 varas in the cardinal directions from the church).
