In this portion of the text it is possibly meant to be the town founder speaking in the first person, saying that he came here to lead the people. He came to name the towns and develop the people of the great venerable father (i.e. St. Michael), who looked upon him with compassionate eyes, and who would remain here. The town founder says that he was baptized, and came here to name towns and animate the people of these towns. He adds that “now everything is registered here in black ink on these pieces of paper, and truly for always they will be for the (town’s) benefit, so that in (this town or on these lands) we will work and pay our tributes to our great governor.” This multiple page text all appears to be in the same hand, and the ink is a brown color. [f. 3v., Nahuatl-to-English translation by Stephanie Wood:] I arrived here to lead the people, I arrived to name towns and to develop the people of our great venerable father; he remained looking at me with compassionate eyes and as he will remain there, I was baptized and I arrived here to name towns to encourage the people in these towns; and now everything here is registered in black ink on these pieces of paper and will actually be that way forever for your benefit […] so that we will work on [the land] and we will pay tributes to our great ruler.
