Bk. IV, f. 2r., building and man at Hueycalco

This page, which is the front face of the second folio of sixteen folios (also Book IV, folio 2 recto) is typical of the image-heavy pages that feature landscapes included in these territorial claims of Santa María Iztacapan (modern State of Hidalgo, Mexico) late in the Spanish colonial period. The scene featres a short text in Nahuatl, an image of a building and a man, painted in gray, brown, black, and white. This scene includes a two-story structure, apparently the principal church of Iztacapan. Standing near the structure is an indigenous male, presumably a town leader, and possibly a church official. The text on this page tells us that we are seeing a place called Hueycalco, where the citizens of the altepetl (or town, presumably Iztacapan) own land. [SW]
