Bk. IV, f. 2r., gloss (”tiopan”)

This is a detail, appearing in Book IV, folio 2 recto, showing, possibly, the first part of a word in Nahuatl, “tiopan” (teopan) located to the left of the church tower. The word seems to end to the right of the church tower with “tlacal” (tlacatl, which would make the full word “teopantlacatl,” or church official). Both parts are written in black ink, apparently in the same hand, but this is a different hand and ink than what comprises the principal text at the bottom of the page. If the word “teopantlacatl” is intended, it may be a reference to the man standing near the church in this larger scene. “Tiopan” may have also been intended to stand alone. [SW]

Este es un detalle que posiblemente muestra la primer parte de una palabra en Nahuatl, teopan, ubicada a la izquierda de la torre de la iglesia. La palabra parece terminar al costado derecho de la torre con “tlacal”, formando la palabra “teopantlacatl” que significa clérigo. Ambas partes estan escritas en tinta negra, aparentemente por el mismo autor, aunque éste es diferente del que escribió el texto principal en la parte inferior de la página. Si la palabra “teopantlacatl” fue usada intencionalmente, puede ser en referencia al hombre cerca de la iglesia en esta escena amplia. “Tiopan” también podría haber sido la intención de mantenerse solo.
