This Nahuatl text finishes providing the European date for the gathering with the viceroy. It also provides a prehispanic calendrical rendering of “One Flint, Two Reed.” Both the European and the Nahua dates seem mismanaged. The meeting in the cabildo building, most likely, involved making a census, setting up the town with Spanish colonial recognition, establishing how the people would be paying new tributes (to the Spanish overlords). The indigenous ruler(s) would have received the staff of office, a type of recognition of their right to rule locally as long as they cooperated with the Spanish colonial officials, supplying the labor and tributes that were being required. The town also would have had its lands recognized, and the writer was to document that the viceroy recognized the town lands. We do not know for certain that this event is historical or imagined, but it was not unusual for some towns to experience these sixteenth-century colonial adjustments. [SW]
