cactus pear plant
This is a detail of a fruit-bearing cactus pear or prickly pear plant appearing in Book VI, folio 1 recto. This is outlined in black ink and washed with a blue-green watercolor. The fruits are not given a separate color. The roots are somewhat visible, as are the spines. The small round shapes on the top of some leaves may be fruits called “tunas” in Spanish.
