full view, Scene 15

"Know, my sons, that this is the place where we gathered, our parents and relatives: this little piece of land called Copitz…. (The paper is here torn, from which incoherency results.) our house near a little brook and we enjoyed the word of God and they see, accomplished though it, persons baptized into the faith if Christ, God bless thee. Blessed art thou among all women, Santa Maria!... (Here the interruption for tearing continues.)" [Source: Frederick Starr's English translation of the text found in the corresponding scene in the version he saw in the pueblo in 1898, published in his The Mapa de Cuauhtlantzinco (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1898), p. 17] Starr's footnote: "The parts here destroyed by tearing may be satisfactorily restored from the second part of the text. The word bondad in this passage is plainly an error of the copyist for heredad. The text for 16 and 17 is entirely destroyed in the first text, but completed in the second. The two numbers are on a single sheet of the ordinary size. The cross consists of a tree crossed by the sword of Cortes. At the top and sides the branches end in conventionalized floral designs, upon which are sacred monograms." [p. 17]
