milpas & boundary marker, “E”

In this detail we see uniformly sized, green, agricultural rows. The gloss tells us that these are milpas (cornfields). Milpas were typically worked by indigenous people, whereas Spaniards would more typically raise stock and grow wheat. The upper left corner of this detail includes the letter E, explained in the key as the boundary marker that divides the lands pertaining to the two pueblos, Santa María Atzompa and San Jacinto [Amilpas].
