group of indigenous women
This is a detail of the group of eight or nine women in the gathering in front of the church at Tolcayuca. The women are sketched in black ink, and they are not painted. All probably are dressed this way, but one is more clearly wearing a garment that appears to be a huipilli (huipil in Spanish), given the rectangle on her chest. Her hair appears to be arranged with two knots on her head in the traditional manner of Nahua women. All the women appear to be sitting on their legs, also in the traditional manner of Nahua women, on the ground, close to the earth. The women’s placement on the ground may be an indication of their association with the terrestrial realm (personal communication, Rosemary Joyce).

Este es un detalle del grupo de ocho o nueve mujeres reunidas enfrente de la iglesia en Tolcayuca. Las mujeres están delineadas en negro, aunque no están pintadas. Todas probablemente están vestidas en esta forma,pero una claramente parece estar vestida con una prenda que parece ser un huipil, considerando el rectángulo en su pecho. Su pelo parece arreglado con dos nudos en la cabeza según el manera tradicional de las mujeres Nahua. Las mujeres parecen estar sentadas sobre sus piernas, también en la manera tradicional de mujeres Nahua, en el piso, cerca de la tierra. La ubicación de las mujeres en el suelo puede ser un indicativo de su asociación con el reino terrestre (comunicación personal, Rosemary Joyce).
