The cacique, holding his staff of office, symbolic of his authority in this situation, appears to be seated at the table (a European introduction that was embraced enthusiastically in indigenous communities), an important location. The friar is at his side and appears to gesture to him, a sign that the friar also has some authority in this situation.
These two men sit before a group of indigenous women, who are on the ground nearby (though not shown in this slice).
