This is a detail of the principal text block on the manuscript. This text tells us that the manuscript refers to a time at the end of a cycle in the pre-Columbian Nahua calendar, when years were “tied” or bundled. It is a record of the boundaries of the altepetl, or town, made for posterity. It seems to record activity associated with a Wednesday in July in 1520, with a date that shows obvious European influence. The date is given in the “present” as though the text was actually recorded on that date, but the manuscript is clearly not in the style of a manuscript from the sixteenth century. It is either a copy, it is contrived, or it is a history of that period, recorded in a shifting “present.”

El texto nos cuenta que el manuscrito se refiere a un tiempo al final de un ciclo del calendario Nahua, cuando los años fueron determinados o fueron atados. Es un registro de los linderos del altepetl, o del pueblo, hecho para la posteridad. Parece registrar actividad asociada con un miércoles en juiio en 1520, con una fecha que obviamente muestra influencia europea. La fecha es dada en el “presente” como si el texto fue registrado en esa fecha, pero el manuscripto claramente no es el estilo de un manuscripto del siglo XVI. En este día nuestros años estan atados. El año y tiempo se cuenta, [el cuento del año cuando] que este mapa fue escrito y se registró y los linderos de nuestro altepetl se establecieron para que siempre puede ser verificado. Yo apunto que es hoy, miércoles, en la cuenta de julio, contando un ‘xiquipilli’ [aquí, mil] y 300 y 200 y 20 [o 1520] años.

English Translation

On this day our years are tied. The year and time is counted, [the year count when] this map was written and recorded and the boundaries of our altepetl were established so that it would always be verified. I record that it is today, Wednesday, in the count of July, counting one xiquipilli [here, thousand] and 300 and 200 and 20 [i.e. 1520] years.
