Paying homage
On two occasions, the Mapa de Teozacualco depicts the ritual in which groups of lords pay homage to early Tilantongo's rulers. The ritual represents the reaffirmation of the political integrity of the Tilantongo polity. Gifts were presented to the new ruler as a sign of loyalty and recognition. The first occasion was the accession of lord “20 Jaguars” in the last quarter of the 11th century and the second was the accession of lord 8 Deer “Jaguar Claw” a generation later. This second event is extensively covered in the Codex Nuttall, where it spans several pages (pp. 54-68).
