apple trees

We know from the gloss that this is a detail of an apple tree, apparently grafted onto native tree trunks,and the numerical component indicates that there were 52 apple trees in this orchard. Each flag appears to represent 20, and there are 12 ones. It remains to be clarified why one of the flags is turned around. [SW]
