glyph (place name)

This detail shows a place glyph that is glossed “cuauyacac” (i.e. Quauhyacac, tree-nose). This is either a local toponym, or it may refer to one of the six caves near Tetzcoco that were once inhabited by Chichimec tribes. The other caves were Tzinacanoztoc, Oztoticpac, Huexotla, Coatlichan, and Tlatzalan, according to Rémi Siméon’s Diccionario de la lengua mexicana (1977), xiv. Note the nose in the tree trunk, which is part of the place glyph. [SW]
