glyph (place name)

This detail is a place glyph that is glossed “Tezcoçinco.” It has the shape of a hill or mountain (tepetl) and curving parallel lines going down to one side (reminiscent of the lines on the tetl, stone, glyph). There is a historically important hill next to Tetzcoco that was named Tetzcotzinco. Tetzcotzinco is the diminutive of Tetzcoco (Tetzcuco, Tezcuco, Texcuco, Texcoco), and so they both have the same meaning, the place of the peak. The -tzin is a reverential. Tetzcotzinco was the site of imperial gardens in the post-Classic era of Nezahualcoyotl, in the 15th century. Included in the gardens were medicinal plants and a zoo. A circular bath surrounded by three frogs carved in stone survive in the archaeological site here. [SW; drawing from: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tezcutzingo]
