land parcel with measurements

land parcel with measurements

This detail shows a parcel that is not a perfect rectangle, with very specific measurements for every facet. The gloss reads “Tollancinco,” which may be a local toponym or it could refer to the altepetl of Tulancingo (as it is spelled today). The measurements appear to be in a variety of pre-Columbian Nahua units, such as the yollotli (heart, measured from fingertips to the center of the chest), mitl (arrow, measured from one elbow to the wrist on the opposing arm), and one or two more units of measure.
