“Bario de San Pedro Martir”
This detail represents the small community or neighborhood (barrio, in contemporary orthography) of San Pedro Martir. We see a simplified church structure with a portrait of St. Peter the Martyr standing inside. In Mexican art history, Peter often holds a broad-axe,* but here he may be holding a stylized macana (obsidian-studded club). [SW]
