This is the iconic figure who was ruling the empire from Mexico-Tenochtitlan at the time of the Spanish invasion. Here he is dressed like a European, but he holds a macquahuitl, or pre-Hispanic weapon in his right hand. The gloss identifies him as “Monctesuma” (Moctezuma). [SW]
