“Malinchin” (i.e. Malintzin, Malinche)

“Malinchin” (i.e. Malintzin, Malinche)

"Malintzin" was a Nahuatlization of "Marina", the baptismal name of the iconic interpreter who worked for Cortés. The Spaniards re-Hispanized the name to Malinche, and the Nahua scribe who wrote these glosses tried to approximate that name, not knowing the original Nahuatl version of her name. Note how she wears a huipilli, or indigenous blouse, with a long skirt. She hold perhaps a rattle and a feather fan or bouquet of flowers, and, unusually, wears a European-type crown. The crown is reminiscent of the way figures of the Virgin Mary could be crowned. [SW]
