corregidor’s house

corregidor’s house

This is a detail of the home of the Corregidor, the local colonial Spanish official. This two- or three-story house with arches on the second floor, faces the market square (tianquiztli, in Nahuatl). The arches represent a European influence. The house is colored pink or red, which is typical of the sixteenth century (whether pre-Hispanic or early colonial building exteriors). The lower level, main structure, appears to be built of cut-stone blocks or adobe bricks. Smoke emerges from a chimney on the roof of the house. [SW]
